Frank Spring

Frank Spring

The Hunt (2022)

23.75”x17” Oil on paper

A dream-state reflection on the ancient adage, “The big always devour the small.”
The thousands of slashes into the paper, created by a steel screw, contribute to one of the essentials of painting for me — contrast.

This painting is in a private collection.

Shared Interpretations

The last time I saw Frank he showed me what would be his last painting. I had just moved to the countryside of Virginia after spending most of my life in NYC. I experienced a quiet in my new home unlike I had ever in my life. Nature seemed in perfect harmony with itself. A culture shock, definitely, but what was more shocking was that my idyllic backyard slowly revealed itself to be a virtual killing field. Every creature a prey to another creature. Fish eating bugs, birds eating fish, hawks killing squirrels, fox killing moles, deer eating all the plants, humans sometimes killing deer and vultures eating every leftover scrap as if nothing ever happened! I felt out of place and longed for the safety of my tiny NY apartments. Frank showed me The Hunt, and we giggled over his exact depiction of what I was experiencing. The expressions on the faces of his creatures, eating and being eaten was exactly how I felt, fearful and….hungry!

I look at that painting every day and think of Frank, and of us..seeking..hoping..fearing and…hungry! The circle of life.

Frank was connected to it all- so funny, so engaged and expectant. Full of life.

I miss him so.
